Wet Belt & Snapped Belt Repairs
Ford Wet Belt Replacement
Wet belt (belt-in-oil) replacement and failed, snapped belt repairs across the entire Ford EcoBlue range - Transit, Custom, Connect, Courier and Ranger. Diagnosed, rebuilt and re-fitted correctly.
Ford’s modern EcoBlue diesel engines use a timing belt that runs inside the engine, submerged in oil — commonly known as a wet belt or “belt-in-oil” system. It was designed to reduce friction and emissions, but in practice the wet belt has become one of the most notorious causes of catastrophic engine failure on the Transit, Transit Custom, Transit Connect, Transit Courier and Ford Ranger. Our specialist wet belt replacement and snapped belt repair service puts it right — removed, rebuilt and re-fitted from just £2,495.
What Is a Wet Belt and Why Does It Fail?
Unlike a traditional dry timing belt or a metal timing chain, a wet belt is bathed in engine oil throughout its life. Over time, heat, contaminated oil and extended service intervals cause the belt’s rubber coating to break down. As it degrades, tiny fragments of belt material flake away and are carried through the engine by the oil. Those fragments collect in the sump and gradually block the oil pickup strainer — the mesh filter that feeds oil to the pump.
Once the pickup is blocked, oil pressure collapses. The bearings, turbo and top end are starved of lubrication, and severe engine damage follows within seconds. In the worst cases the belt itself snaps, allowing the pistons to collide with the valves and wrecking the cylinder head. Either way, a failed wet belt almost always means a full engine rebuild is required.
Models Affected by Wet Belt Failure
We carry out wet belt replacement and snapped belt repairs across the entire affected Ford range:
- Ford Transit — 2.0 EcoBlue (1,995 cc)
- Transit Custom — 2.0 EcoBlue (1,995 cc)
- Transit Connect — 1.5 EcoBlue (1,499 cc)
- Transit Courier — 1.5 EcoBlue (1,499 cc)
- Ford Ranger — 2.0 EcoBlue (1,996 cc)
Warning Signs of a Failing Wet Belt
Wet belt failure often gives little warning, which is why preventative replacement at the correct interval is so important. However, there are signs to watch for:
- A rattling or slapping noise from the front of the engine, especially on cold start
- The oil pressure warning light flickering or staying on
- Oil that looks gritty or contains visible black rubber particles
- Rough running, misfires or a sudden loss of power
- The engine cutting out and refusing to restart (a snapped belt)
If you notice any of these, stop driving immediately and call us on 03330 50 98 02. Continuing to run the engine can turn a belt replacement into a complete rebuild.

Our Wet Belt Service: Removed, Rebuilt & Re-fitted
Where the belt is due but has not yet failed, we carry out a full preventative wet belt replacement, renewing the belt, tensioner, oil pump and pickup strainer, and flushing the system to remove any debris. Where the belt has already snapped or shed material into the engine, a full rebuild is usually the only reliable fix — and that is our headline removed, rebuilt and re-fitted from £2,495 service.
- Full diagnosis to establish belt condition and engine damage
- Wet belt, tensioner and guides replaced with latest-spec parts
- Oil pump and pickup strainer renewed to restore oil pressure
- Complete sump clean and oil-system flush to remove debris
- Cylinder head inspection and rebuild if valves have been struck
- Full re-fit, engine test and fresh oil to Ford specification

Do Not Ignore a Wet Belt Warning
The single biggest mistake owners make is delaying wet belt replacement to save money. A preventative belt change is a fraction of the cost of an engine rebuild — and a snapped belt can write off an otherwise healthy vehicle. If your Ford is anywhere near its belt interval, or you have any doubt about its history, get it checked now. Our team is here to help with honest advice and a fast, fair quote.
